Animal Stories
Animal stories are a perennial favorite in children's literature. Picture books for babies and toddlers frequently feature domestic animals such as kittens and puppies or farm animals such as cows and sheep and horses. As they get older and books take on real story lines, animals become more human. The Berenstain Bears, for instance, wear clothes, eat human food, and live in houses. Animal stories can be great silly fun, such as the Curious George or Paddington Bear books, or they can be full of adventure and drama, especially for older readers. Often these novels for children feature an animal on a quest or a difficult journey. Animal stories have always been a part of human culture. The earliest storytellers probably centered their tales around the hunt that was crucial for survival. Native peoples created myths and legends populated with animals. Aesop's fables presented lessons in human behavior through the actions of prideful lions and greedy foxes. Folk tales such as the Uncle Remus stories followed that template. Fairy tales, too, often involved a magical beast or bird that helped the human protagonist. And let's not forget what a large role extinct animals like dinosaurs and mammoths, or fantasy animals such as unicorns, can play in such stories.
