Kids Chapter Books
Do your kids like to read story books in series, following the adventures of a single character or group of characters from one book to the next? Do they remember details from previous books when reading new ones? If so, they are probably ready to begin reading children's novels, or chapter books. Start with a book that has short chapters and plenty of illustrations. It's a good idea to remind your child about what happened in the previous chapter before beginning the next. Chapter books allow great opportunities for discussing what you and your children are reading. Encourage them to guess what might happen next! As children begin to read on their own, you might take turns reading to them and letting them read to you. You may soon find that they are reading by themselves during the day! When they can read effectively on their own, that doesn't mean you should stop reading to them. Let them read books on their own level, while you read something more difficult to them. Long after they can read for themselves, children still benefit from being read to. It allows you to introduce them to a higher level of reading and urge them toward it. They also benefit greatly from the quiet bonding time that reading with a parent provides. At Bouncing Ball Books, we are expanding our catalog to include chapter books for children. In January of 2007, we'll be introducing a wonderful chapter book called The Adventures of Nihu by Uwuigiaren Omouyi. Omouyi lives in Nigeria, and has written a marvelous story about Nihu, a Nigerian boy who faces adventure and danger in modern-day Africa. To learn more, visit us often at Bouncingballbooks.com!
