Reading picture books together is fun for the child and fun for the parent. A consistent reading time, often just before bed, is a reassuring routine that helps ease children out of their active daytime world and into rest. It's a time when your child gets your undivided attention, when you can giggle together about the antics on the page and discuss things without interruption. Experts in early education believe it is important to begin reading to children long before they can actually understand the process. The simplest picture books may not even have words, but the bright illustrations help your baby to focus on them. Taking time to look at picture books with your baby will create a pleasant association between books and being close to you. As your baby grows up, she'll continue to have positive associations with books and reading. As your child grows, picture books begin to contain stories. Emergent reader books may have just a few words on each page, but gradually beginning reader books with more complex stories will appeal.
